Hardwood: Maintenance Tips

While we can handle installation and major repairs, it’s up to you to maintain the quality of your brand new hardwood flooring! Read our tips below for keeping your floor like new:

  • Place floor mats and/or area rugs in high traffic areas.
  • Please wait 30 days after the final coat to allow the floor to properly breathe while it fully cures.
  • Regularly clean your rugs, as they can collect dirt and debris.
  • Rugs in direct sunlight should be moved often to avoid picture framing, which can happen over time.
  • Place felt pads under the legs of all moving furniture, i.e. chairs, tables, etc.
  • Regularly dust mop or vacuum your floors. Dust can be abrasive, much like sandpaper, under your feet.
  • Functional Floors recommends Bona or Duraseal maintenance products, which can be found at your local flooring stores as well as most “big box” hardware stores. Follow the instructions for the specific product you choose.
  • Spray cleaner on the floor or on a dry cleaner pad, and clean floor in a back and forth motion along the length of the boards.
  • Never wet mop or allow water to remain on the floor.
  • Vinegar, steam mops, and most other “so-called” hardwood cleaners sold at grocery stores can be too abrasive or acidic and are NOT recommended.
  • Every 3-5 years or when the finish begins to wear, it is advised to have your floor “buffed and recoated.” This is a maintenance process that saves time, money, and the life of your floor by avoiding a full refinishing. Contact Functional Floors to help with this process!
